Bring your love for greenery into the clay studio! Pots for Plants is a specialized 6-week course designed around the unique structural needs of different plant varieties. In this project-focused class, we kick off week one by planting a seed that you will care for and take home, and spend the remaining weeks exploring the mechanics of creating thriving clay homes for your plants.
Through targeted weekly demonstrations, you will learn how to design, build, and glaze five distinct types of planters using both wheel-throwing and handbuilding techniques.

Class schedule
Week 1:
Seed Starting + Hanging Planters
We begin the course by planting a seed together so you can watch it grow throughout the session. Then, we dive into building hanging planters, focusing on wall-thickness consistency and securing strong attachment points for cords or chains.
Week 2:
Two-Piece Drainage Planters + Matching Dishes
Learn the mechanics of proper root health. This week's demo covers throwing or handbuilding a planter with built-in drainage holes alongside a perfectly fitted, matching saucer to catch excess water.
Week 3:
Self-Watering Planters
Discover how to engineer a two-part, self-watering vessel. We will create an unglazed, porous inner reservoir nested inside a glazed outer water basin, allowing your plants to drink at their own pace.
Week 4:
Combination Piece Planters
Go big by learning how to construct a complex planter utilizing multiple clay elements. The demonstration will focus on throwing separate pieces and securely scoring and slipping them together.
Week 5:
Catch-Up + Assembly Studio
A dedicated fabrication session to finalize any unfinished builds, clean up rims and attachments, and ensure all five planters are ready for the first firing.
Week 6:
Glazing Techniques for Planters
The final week is a comprehensive glaze demonstration. Learn how to strategically glaze your pieces for functionality, balancing raw clay aesthetics with glazed surfaces that protect your home surfaces from moisture.
DETAILS
Your tuition includes a 30 lb allotment of standard studio clay, which covers all subsequent house glazes and bisque/glaze firings.

Additional Clay + Firing Fees
Additional studio clay can be purchased for $2.00 per pound (this price includes the raw clay, house glazes, and all subsequent firings).
Tools Provided
Standard studio tools are provided for use during your scheduled class time.
To safeguard our kilns and prevent firing accidents, outside clays, slips, or glazes from other studios or external suppliers are strictly prohibited in our facility. All materials used must originate from 716 CERAMICS STUDIO.
Kiln Safety Policy
STUDIO POLICIES + EXPECTATIONS
A minimum of 4 enrolled students is required to run this session. In the rare event a class does not meet minimum enrollment, you will be notified in advance and issued a full refund.

Makeup Week
Includes one scheduled makeup session held the week following the final class to ensure all your glazed work is ready for the final kiln firing.
Hard Two-Week Refund Policy
Tuition is refundable (minus a standard credit card processing/service fee) only if a cancellation request is submitted at least 2 weeks (14 days) prior to the first day of the semester. Cancellations made within the 14-day window or after the semester begins are strictly non-refundable and non-transferable.
Shelf Space + Unclaimed Work
(The 30/60 Rule)
Due to high studio volume and limited shelf capacity, strict timelines are enforced:
ABANDONED GREENWARE (30 Days): Any unfinished, bone-dry, or leather-hard greenware left on the student shelves for more than 30 days without activity will be recycled to clear space.
FINISHED FIRED POTTERY (60 Days): Completed, glaze-fired pottery will be held on the pickup shelves for a maximum of 60 days (2 months) from the final day of the semester. Students are solely responsible for tracking and retrieving their pieces. Any work left unclaimed past these dates will be cleared, recycled, or disposed of.
